A Welcome Winter Habitat for Wild Birds

 As temperatures drop, abundant food and water sources begin to dwindle for wild birds. Here are some simple things you can do to make sure your yard remains a welcome winter habitat for wild birds.
Provide a Water Source
 Water is one of the most important things you can provide wild birds in the winter particularly because most natural water sources freeze. Consider purchasing a heated bird bath such as this one from Farm Innovators Four Seasons (shown left). It is designed to run only when necessary and cost pennies a day to operate. Consider Adjusting Your Bird Feeding Regimen As natural food sources such as berries and insects grow increasingly sparse in the winter months, alternative energy sources become increasingly important. Consider supplementing your bird feeding regimen with suet. Suet is an animal fat that provides a very high concentration of energy and is known to attract woodpeckers, finches, chickadees, and many other varieties of birds. In addition to suet, black-oil sunflower seeds make an excellent winter food source for wild birds because the seeds contain an extremely high quality protein and are meatier than most other seeds. Plus, the seeds’ high oil content provides the birds with instant energy.
