Protecting Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borer
The Emerald Ash Borer
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an exotic beetle that was discovered in Michigan back in 2002. Since then, it has killed tens of millions of trees in a number of states including Wisconsin. The problem is caused by the adult beetle’s larvae which feed on the tree’s inner bark thereby disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. The Emerald Ash Borer typically emerges in mid to late May with its presence peaking by late June. Female beetles begin laying eggs shortly after their arrival and the resulting larvae begin to destroy ash trees. Once infested, small trees can die within one to two years and large trees can die within three to four years.
The Do-It-Yourself Way to Protect your Ash Trees
The Emerald Ash Borer represents a serious threat to ash trees. However, you can successfully protect your trees from this invasive insect. We recommend using Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree & Shrub Protect & Feed concentrate which contains Merit® insecticide. Its dual-action formula kills EAB and prevents new infestations for twelve months. It also features a slow-release fertilizer to help keep your ash trees healthy in the process. For best results, apply Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree & Shrub Protect & Feed anytime mid-April through mid-May. See product container for complete application instructions and be sure to print out our coupon featured in the April issue of eGarden News.
