Feeding the Birds

Bird Feeding Tips
  • Safflower seeds are a bird feeding favorite. They are inexpensive, highly nutritious are known to attract cardinals, woodpeckers and grosbeaks. Plus, their bitter taste deters squirrels.
  • Different types of bird seed will attract different types of birds and black-oil sunflower seeds are known to attract the widest varieties of birds. Thin and easily broken by small beaks, black-oil sunflower seeds are meaty and contain an extremely high-quality protein.
  • Creating a welcome habitat for birds requires more than just food. Be sure to provide a water source and shelter.
  • Water is one of the most important things you can provide birds during the winter – combat freezing conditions with heated bird baths or bird bath heaters.
  • Supplement your bird seed with suet, or animal fat. It offers a high concentration of energy and is known to attract woodpeckers, finches, chickadees and many others.
  • Avoid hulls from littering your yard with a totally consumable bird feed mix such as Prince’s Bird’s Favorite No Waste Mix™.
  • Deter squirrels with a squirrel-proof bird feeder in which the weight of the squirrel automatically closes the feeding ports.
  • Keep birds safe from window collisions by keeping feeders a minimum of three feet from all windows.
  • Fill your bird feeder year-round and you will be delighted to watch as each season brings different types of birds to your yard.
