Bird Feeding: Create a Welcome Winter Sight

Bird Feeding - Create a Welcome Winter Sight

The sight of beautiful wild birds is always a welcome wonder. Whether you’re an avid bird watching enthusiast or simply appreciate the warmth these birds bring to long winter days, the right bird feeding products can successfully attract many species of wild birds to your own backyard.

When it comes to bird feeding products, not all seeds and mixes are the same, and a bit of knowledge goes a long way in maximizing your enjoyment of this remarkable pastime.  For example, the widest variety of birds prefer black-oil sunflower seeds over any other seed offered.  Thin and easily broken by even the smallest of beaks, black-oil sunflower seeds contain an extremely high quality protein and are meatier than most other seeds. With a high oil content that provides birds with instant energy – which is of particular importance during the winter season in cold-weather climates – it is easy to see why the black-oil sunflower seed may arguably be the most important seed in any feeder.

But if your goal is to attract colorful songbirds, consider safflower seeds.  Similar to sunflower seeds, safflower seeds are both inexpensive and highly nutritious, and a favorite of chickadees, nuthatches, House and Purple Finches, and Northern Cardinals.  And the bitter taste of safflower seeds is sure to discourage squirrels and other pesky mammals.

And if you’ve grown tired of hulls littering your yard, think about Prince’s Bird’s Favorite No-Waste Mix™.  Only the finest meats are used in this totally consumable mixture so there are no hulls.

When your bird feeding program calls for variety, consider suet feeding.   Suet, or animal fat, is the most concentrated source of energy for wild birds and is known to attract woodpeckers, finches, chickadees, and many other varieties.  It can be used to supplement, or in some cases replace, your traditional seed feeding program.  Be sure to check out Pine Tree Farms Superior Blend Suet™. This blend can be used year-round and is known to attract a splendid variety of wild birds.

Lastly, if squirrels are a problem, deter them with one of our squirrel-proof bird feeders in which the weight of the squirrel automatically closes the feeding ports.

So whether you’re a devoted bird feeder or value bird feeding as a relaxing and enjoyable hobby, look no further than Stein Gardens & Gifts for all of your bird feeding needs.
